Riding in on the back of Ermac the Basculegion, Thomas cruised through the waters surrounding Sootopolis.

The last time he had been to the city in the crater was to aid in the rescue of Elinor Anderson. What began as a search for information on Andraste turned into the rescue operation for the then Councilwoman. To that end, Thomas allowed himself to be captured, putting himself on the inside of their jail, before quickly breaking out, and wreaking havoc.

Today, Thomas was ready to free the civilians under the thumb of Rocket.

The duo spotted a ship close to the crater wall. Thomas and Ermac sped close towards it, with the use of the latter's Extreme Speed. Upon getting close, the Basculegion slowed himself down, getting just close enough for Thomas to aim his grapple gun towards the rail of the ship. Thomas fired off the grapple hook.

"Ermac, patrol the nearby waters.", Thomas ordered the Basculegion, before hitting a switch on the grapple gun, and reeling himself up to the deck. With a deft vault, Thomas cleared the railing.

From the back of their dragapult, Fern watched as the Kantonian forces mingled with the array of grunts spared from their Hoenn forces. They paced the decks of the boat, waiting for something to happen—for orders to be issued, for something greater to stir in the deep.[break][break]
Further out at sea, the sky above began to darken into an ugly, stormy shade. Though they could have brought lightning down, the ominous rumbles were not of their own creation. Somewhere below the surface, Kyogre raged. They figured it was only a matter of time now before it breached the surface again, erratic and vengeful.[break][break]
Medb darted through the air, agitated as she’d ever been since she’d been corrupted into the shadowed version of herself. Despite her ferality, she still allowed Fern the ability to sit atop her back, and they leaned forward and rested their elbows on the flat fin of her head. A piteous sigh slipped free.[break][break]
They were on the cusp of something. Why was it that everything in the before was so boring?[break][break]
Until—[break][break]
“Oh? What’s this?” they murmured aloud at the sight of someone climbing up over the rail of the ship. “He thinks himself awfully stealthy, doesn’t he?” Electricity crackled from Tapu Koko’s pincers as it slashed at the air. “Oh, tosh. Let’s see what he tries to do first, no? Then we can have our fun.”[break][break]
Irritably, Tapu Koko zipped away and back as their dragapult drifted up over the ship’s prow again.

Upon reeling up to the deck, Thomas was faced with a group of several Rockets. A mix of Hoenn and Kanto Branch. The Hoenn Branch, remembering Thomas' infiltration of their prison the previous year, were angry at him. The Kanto Rockets looked at the man with bloodlust in their eyes.

The group summoned their Pokemon. Mightyena, Weezing, Arbok, Golbat, Houndoom, and other Pokemon glared at Thomas with murderous intent.

In turn, the Kalosian brought out a trio of Pokemon of his own. His Iron Crown, Ceruledge, and the Tapu Koko that dahlia goode entrusted him with.

An Electric Surge overtook the field, causing the ground beneath them to take on an Electric Terrain. The Iron Crown found themselves invigorated, their offensive prowess becoming greater.

The Rockets charged the quadrio. Tachyon Cutter cut down the opposing Mightyena without mercy. Psycho Cut from the Ceruledge made short work of the Arbok and Weezing from the Kanto Grunts. And the Tapu Koko, brimming with power, bowled through the group with a brutal Wild Charge.

As the Houndoom attempted to cook the Iron Crown with their Flamethrowers, the Ceruledge stepped in to shield the automaton, his Flash Fire allowing him to absorb the attacks. Poisonous attacks from the Weezing and Arbok were tanked by the Iron Crown, taking advantage of its Steel-typing. Finally, the Tapu Koko shielded their comrades from Dark-type assaults from the Mightyena.

Despite the advantage in numbers they had over him, Thomas' experience as a former member of Hoenn's Elite Four, and his bond with his Pokemon, showed themselves through the way the group fought as one. Years of drills and training, years of teaching his Pokemon how to effectively work as a team, to back one another up, paid off in this moment.

Thomas found himself dodging not only opposing Pokemon that tried to sneak up on him, but having to deal with enterprising Rockets in close quarters. Thanks to his years of training in close quarters combat, Thomas made short work of the Rockets that closed in on him. Dodges, counterattacks, use of the environment around him, all of it put to the test against their overwhelming numbers and ferocity.

Despite whatever anger he held towards the Rockets, something kept him from going overboard. It was as if Thomas could feel the strength of his partner. That since it was partnered with Selena Desmarais, it had become much stronger. Despite not being the Guardian's Avatar, he could feel the Tapu Koko's influence keeping him in check.

As Thomas fought off the Rockets, one of the Kanto Rockets in the group watched him closely. Studying his prey, allowing eleven years of resentment to burn like fuel.

It was easy to feel a sense of omnipotence in watching from their vantage above. They were removed from the deck, and so held a measure of control. It would be one thing to intervene immediately. To espouse their cause and assure that the operative would go no further. They would hold Sootopolis for the glory of Rocket.[break][break]
They could do so, but it would be no more than The Charlatan playing his games. Setting the stage for a performance that was no more than that. Fern was not there for their loyalty. Sootopolis was their home. Their livelihood had been built up in the stone streets. Their sanctuary under threat, their home with jayden cross. And self-preservation above all else demanded defense, whether against the League or Kyogre’s rampage.[break][break]
But the more erratic part of Fern called for chaos just as strongly.[break][break]
A desire to see what could be pulled apart at the seams for the simple sake of it. To delight in watching it all fall apart…so long as they remained unaffected by such destruction, of course.[break][break]
However, curiosity held Fern in place, chin propped in their hand as they leaned against his dragapult. Medb’s tail lashed, but years of practice in balancing on the backs of these spectral dragons had made them accustomed to the jostling movements, no matter how much antsier the shadowed beast was.[break][break]
It took little time for the man to be spotted– it was natural for the forces under their jurisdiction to move into immediate action. A brow raised curiously, and they fixated on some of the Kantonian fleet. Fern Delaney wasn’t terribly familiar with Thomas Benoit despite his status as a senior member within the League itself. But it certainly seemed as though many of the grunts knew exactly who they were dealing with.[break][break]
Still, it made no matter. It would be a quick distraction, and nothing more.[break][break]
The array of light from emerging pokemon lit up from around the ship, but they did not move until the confirmation sounded in the comms at their ears. “Proceed.” Their go ahead, flippant and almost bored in tone. It would be quick work, they were certain.[break][break]
And then–[break][break]
And then the slight shift of a table turning.[break][break]
Their eyes glossed over the Iron Crown, then the Ceruledge. But the third prompted the admin to perk, sitting upright and at attention. “Well, well…” they muttered, glance darting to their own Tapu Koko–who had fixed its attention on the emerging Tapu Koko with intense scrutiny.[break][break]
“It looks like your friend is back.” Their patron remained inscrutable as it studied their brightened mirror’s movement. They hadn’t encountered it in some time–not since they’d dropped in on CIAN MAHER and kyle lopez training with it. “It looks stronger.”[break][break]
Suddenly, this was not nearly as boring as it had been before. But it did not seem that the man tearing through his force was the same as The Charlatan–ungifted with the League Tapu Koko’s blessing. Perhaps the spirit was much less obliging than their own.[break][break]
“Don’t be shy,” they spoke into the communication channel again, pressing the piece to his ear as the order fell to spur forward those who had not yet been knocked away by the combined efforts of the man’s pokemon. “Press forward. Do not yield.” It would be the prompting that the Kantonian studying Thomas Benoit would need.[break][break]
That little push over the edge into malice and bitter vengeance for the sake of what had been lost at the hands of a haunting Wraith.[break][break]
The man stepped forward, ahead of the rest. A snarling mightyena at his side.[break][break]

"Benoit! You'll fucking die for what you did!", shouted one of the Rockets, as he charged Thomas, knife in hand. Meanwhile, his Mightyena charged the Ceruledge, as the Tapu Koko was kept busy by other Rocket-owned Pokemon.

The Rocket's rush, backed with the ferocity of an eleven year-old grudge, managed to overwhelm Thomas. The Rocket stabbed towards Thomas' midsection, murderous intent burning in his eyes.

"You remember my brother!? The one you beat in a coma!?", the Rocket grilled the Kalosian, still attempting to drive the knife into the Kalosian with all his might and ferocity. Thomas could only intercept the attempts, getting cut up, but ultimately avoiding having his vitals or veins hit.

"Saito, right? Yeah, I remember how I beat him - six years after he stole my best friend, sold him to his death!", Thomas retorted. Thomas powered through the pain, desperately looking for an opening to turn the tables.

Meanwhile, the Ceruledge desperately held off the Mightyena. This one seemed to be stronger than the others they faced, the 'alpha' of the so-called pack. The Ceruledge feared that if he utilized Phantom Force to get away from him, then the Mightyena's next target was Thomas himself. He had to keep the beast occupied.

All he could do was defend against the Crunches with his Bitter Blades, in a desperate bid to survive the angry beast.

"All that, over a stupid little mutt, that you could've easily replaced!?", the Rocket scoffed. "That's why my brother is rotting away in a hospital bed!?"

The man's assault on Thomas was ceaseless. It took all of Thomas' focus, all of his training, just to avoid being fatally stabbed by the angry man.

"You think you're fucking special!? You think you got the right to fuck with us!? Well, even if I die here today, there are more of us, ready to make you pay for fucking with us! Starting with that little shit that you're training! Then your precious little whore! I know a guy that'll take good care of her!", the Rocket remarked, a lecherous chuckle escaping his lips.

In that moment, Thomas' rage boiled over. Perhaps it was Tapu Koko being occupied with the small army of Pokemon attempting to bring them down. Perhaps it was the threat of Thomas' loved ones being put in danger that sent him over the edge. Thomas' already strong hatred for Rocket intensified in this moment.

How dare they threaten Vanilla Kingsley!? How dare they threaten DESIREE BLOOMS!?

Thomas delivered a vicious headbutt to the man, breaking his nose, before tossing him into the nearest wall. As the man gripped his nose, gushing with blood, Thomas kicked the knife out of his hand, before pinning him to the wall, and violently pummeling the man.

Meanwhile, Mordred himself finally got the opening he needed. With a well-timed use of Close Combat, the battered and angry Ceruledge overwhelmed the canine with a barrage of slashes, stabs, and kicks, finally taking the beast out of commission.

"When your brother finally makes it to hell, send him my regards!", Thomas spat at the Rocket.

Before he could finish the Rocket off, something interrupted him. That same interruption caught Tapu Koko's attention, filling the Guardian Deity with an unbridled rage of their own.

It grew rather personal, rather fast. Perhaps this man was from Kanto? It must've been so. Fern watched him circle the deck as their operative moved forward to engage. And how pitiful it was to seem him disarmed relatively quick. Would vengeance get the best of him? Fern leaned forward, but furious eyes turned upward, and locked onto a shadowy doppelganger.[break][break]
“It seems we’ve been noticed,” they hummed, eyes cutting toward Tapu Koko, “no thanks to any stealth on your part, I’m sure.” But the deity cared little for the reprimand. Its attention remained fixed on the other Tapu Koko, noting its building fury. It spun around Fern as they drifted downward—lower from their original vantage, though they remained high enough out of reach.[break][break]
Electricity crackled around them, crawling along their patron’s pincers and forking from its body. Fern paid it no mind—they were at home in the lightning, immune to the charge. “As much as I was enjoying the theater of your little drama, I’m afraid that’ll be quite enough.” Their voice was a croon as they looked down upon Thomas.[break][break]
His dragapult’s tongue flicked, restless agitation evident in the dart of her glowing red eyes. Unpredictability etched itself in the twitch of her claws and the lash of her tail— “On second thought,” the admin continued, perching a hand under their chin in pronounced thought, “Perhaps you should finish the job. Embrace your violence.” Fern grinned, his expression sharp and goading.
It was easy to flip from one side to the other, dancing a knife’s edge, even as the grunt looked up at him in outrage—an angered cry of “Who’s side are you on?” Drifting up to his ears.[break][break]
He laughed, waving a hand. “My side, of course.” But his grin only widened. He waited for that last flicker, any hesitation from the League operative before his dragapult jerked downward, a volley of frenzied DRAGON DARTS torpedoing downward to separate him from the man he sought to kill.[break][break]
“It’s all about the timing,” they complained before another laugh crawled up their throat, “And I do so like a game. This one does too, and I think it has something in mind.”[break][break]
A nod toward the Tapu Koko sent it flashing away. But not before an ELECTRO BALL grew between the halves of its mask and exploded outward toward its counterpart. A not-so-harmless game of catch, or an invitation to meet it out over the water.[break][break]
Though they could have easily summoned a storm of their own, it was quickly deemed unnecessary.[break][break]
The boat rocked as a rumble of thunder spread over the ocean. The waters lashed, but Fern embraced the Titan’s threat. As the clouds overhead darkened, flashes of light illuminated the soft curves of cumulonimbus in gloomy shades of gray and violet.[break][break]
“Do keep up~” Fern winked, before shooting straight toward the open water in attempt to catch up with their companion. “Turn the boat, keep close to the city,” he spoke into the comms as the remaining capable members of the fleet scrambled, “do not abandon the line of defense, but prepare yourselves for Kyogre’s arrival.”

Before Thomas could deliver the finishing blow onto the Rocket, a voice interrupts him. Thomas, keeping the Rocket in a hold, turns to face the newly revealed threat. Interestingly, said man has a blackened Tapu Koko in his company, one that seemed to make his own Tapu Koko enraged.

"And you are-?", Thomas began. "So much for solidarity, right?", Thomas began to taunt, before a volley of Dragon Darts came flying towards them. Thomas immediately let go of his opponent, and scrambled out of the path of the attack. The Kanto Rocket did the same, scrambling in the opposite direction.

"Is this how you Hoenn assholes operate!?", the Rocket called out to the admin, his tone angry and accusatory.

As Thomas got up, he realized that he let a potentially dangerous man live. A man who was no doubt going to come back, and come for his loved ones. A man armed with the knowledge that he was partnered with this Region's Tapu Koko.

He already regretted hesitating, already regretted allowing himself to be interrupted.

The Tapu Koko reflected the attack back at their doppelganger with a Mirror Move, letting out an angry cry at the 'imposter', and the Charlatan in their company.

As the duo left the boat, the Tapu Koko charged after them. The Dewford Guardian wanted blood.

Thomas quickly recalled his Iron Crown and Ceruledge, before whistling, and jumping off the edge of the boat. His Basculegion leaped into the air, allowing Thomas to grab onto him mid-freefall. Upon landing back in the water with a violent splash, Thomas directed Ermac to pursue the Tapu Koko duo.

With a burst of Extreme Speed, the ghostly fish caught up to the battle.

Whatever complaints the Kantonian man had, Fern ignored them. This was not his turf, after all. And it was his jurisdiction to do as he pleased. And apart from that, they had thought the Kantonian branch to be a brutal sort. Surely a few measly DRAGON DARTS were not so terrifying.[break][break]
Instead, they paid attention to the Leaguer, a hand raising to press against their cheek. “The Charlatan, of course.” Unmasked, undisguised. “I would not criticize solidarity if I were to show up on a boat alone.” They shrugged, unbothered before the chase took them out of ear shot.[break][break]
Tapu Koko rushed away from the crackling ELECTRO BALL, looping up into the air before it tucked into a dive. It sailed past Fern, and then climbed back up to circle him. Once, twice. It reached with the prong of its shield to poke at the admin’s shoulder. As if designating him as it in a game of tag before zipping away again.[break][break]
No doubt to continue drawing the brighter Tapu Koko into more of a chase.[break][break]
It was no small prod, though. The jolt traveled through him—not in a painful way. Electricity had not affected Fern since the moment their bond was forged. No, this was a different jolt that rushed through him. The influx of power, alive and stimulating, traveled through their nerves.[break][break]
They flexed their hands, confused as to what that meant.[break][break]
But it was no time to fool around and experiment. Or perhaps….maybe they could. Two birds, one stone.[break][break]
More lightning split down from the clouds, striking at the ocean as thunder continued to rumble. Lounder and tremulous as they drew closer to the center. Their arms stretched out, balancing on the back of their dragapult as they welcomed the onslaught of the storm upon them.[break][break]
Fern grinned as a basculegion rushed into view below them, the man perched upon its back as the ocean sprayed up around them from the force of their speed. “So glad of you to join us,” they called down, something sharp clawing its way through the playfulness of his tone. “Things are about to get tempestuous, I think.” Another peal of thunder echoed his claim.[break][break]
Flashes of lightning illuminated them as their dragapult hissed. The flare of red eyes came seconds before pulses of umbral energy erupted from the seas around Thomas and his basculegion. The SHADOW RAVE twisting and forming the water into uneven spikes.[break][break]
Tapu Koko soaked up the feral currents of the storm as well, AGILITY increasing as it raced across the darkened skies—drawing close to its contorted mirror image before dodging out of reach once again.[break][break]

The Hoennian Tapu Koko cried out furiously towards their doppelganger. The sheer presence of this 'imitation' Tapu Koko offended the Island Guardian to their very core.

As the Shadow Rave came at the Basculegion and his rider, the ghostly fish braced himself, taking the brunt of the attack. As the shadowy attack struck him, Ermac cried out. Despite this, he remained defiant. The Basculegion retaliated by firing a Scale Shot barrage towards the corrupted Dragapult.

Meanwhile, Tapu Koko charged after their own doppelganger, fury in their eyes. An irate cry resonated, as the imitation Guardian split off.

"Koko, keep your head in the game! They're trying to mess with your head, don't let them!", Thomas called out to his partner.

Instead of pursuing the other Tapu Koko, the Hoennian Guardian instead began to Charge themselves up. In this moment, the Tapu Koko began to calm themselves down slightly, reassess the situation.

“Well that is certainly fine with me! I would hate to have an incapable opponent,” they chirped back, unbothered by his attempt to irritate.[break][break]
And in the next breath, the man tried to reason with his Hoennian companion. It seemed a sweet effort, really. Quaint.[break][break]
Fern had long learned that bartering with Tapu Koko to be a largely futile endeavor. There were tricks, yes, but in the end it would only ever do as it pleased. Just as he would only do as he pleased. And in this, they came to agreement. It synced their minds to lean into the unpredictability that built them.[break][break]
But the Hoennian Tapu Koko did not seem to share the same sort of bond.[break][break]
The storm was coalescing around them, building with Kyogre’s fury, but Fern was fixated on the flow of power that spread through them. It was not unlike the rush that had come with their first connection with their Tapu Koko. They remembered the thrill, the bloom of humming electricity in their bones.[break][break]
They were inextricably linked, he and his spirited friend.[break][break]
And when Tapu Koko thrummed with power, so too did The Charlatan.[break][break]
“It seems angrier than the last time we encountered it,” Fern called down to the man, “are you certain that you truly have any measure of control with Tapu Koko?” Their lips curled in a sneer. Around them, the air seemed to hum with the static of building electricity.[break][break]
The charge sparked at their palms, bright light that gathered from the thick of the storm. Rain began to patter against the water, clinging to their clothes and hair.[break][break]
The SCALE SHOT hit his dragapult square in the center of her belly, and Medb shrieked her as her soft spot took the impact. Her hissing curdled into something aggressive and despite her spurring to stay airborne, the shadowed dragapult tilted into a sharp dive toward the offending basculegion. The violet glow of a DRAGON RUSH collected in her snarling jaws, dragging across the water and splitting it like an angry wound on the colliding path to man and fish.[break][break]
Fern grinned, as they veered away. But just for that moment—drawn close in impact—they met Thomas Benoit’s eye as they continued their thought, “I do not think that you do.” The dragapult pulled upward again, but she sagged in the air. their hands had reached for him to apply their skill, but in the pace of the moment, they missed their chance. it slipped through their fingers with a snap and crackle of sparks.[break][break]
Kyogre's storm grew more intense. Above them, the darkened Tapu Koko turned back when the other refused to give chase.[break][break]

Stymied in its fun, their patron sulked—body twisting and pincered arms thrashing outward before snapping its birdlike mask together. The tumult of the natural world around them fed into its power. Thunder and lightning and all of NATURE’S MADNESS lashing out at its reluctant playmate.

So Tapu Koko had a history with their doppelganger. As he gleaned that from the Rocket's statement, Thomas realized why his partner was so angry.

Though weakened by the shedding of his scales, Ermac was also lighter, faster. As the corrupted Dragapult charged the duo, the Basculegion deftly evaded the Dragon Rush with a quick Aqua Jet.

"Tapu Koko is my partner, not my pawn!", Thomas spat back at the Rocket. Though the Dewford Guardian had a will of their own, flaws of their own, Thomas was more than willing to work through it. For the League's sake, for Hoenn's sake.

For the World of Love that he and DESIREE BLOOMS were to create together.

He didn't care how strong this man's bond was with his own Tapu Koko. Thomas had to deal with them.

Having calmed down a bit, the Tapu Koko watched as their Ultra Space counterpart conjured up Nature's Madness towards them. Thinking quickly, the Hoenn-native Guardian unleashed Nature's Madness upon the attack, causing the two forces to violently clash.

Between Kyogre's imminent arrival, and the clashing of Nature's Madness, it was clear that the water was no place to be. Unlike

Thomas, seeing the disaster about to unfold, looked around. "Koko, to the cliffs!", Thomas called out to his partner, before having Ermac ferry him towards the cliffs surrounding Sootopolis. The Tapu Koko followed behind, attempting to goad the 'imposter' over to the cliffs, refusing to turn their back on them for a moment.

The spray of the AQUA JET pelted Medb’s hide and she shrieked, battered back by the force of it. But Fern still had plenty to say.[break][break]
“Good,” he replied, probably unexpectedly so, “they are not to be controlled.” Other Pokémon, perhaps, but they did not presume that they could ever control this one. Much like Tapu Koko did not control them.[break][break]
“But it does not seem to heed your advice much, either, partner that it apparently is.” Their head tilted, smile sharpening. “Perhaps it is taking cues. You draw out one another’s rage.”[break][break]
He had seen the brutality on the boat. How close the man had drawn to severing the tether of that grunt’s hold on life. “Both of you one breath away from doing the unthinkable. Why not just do it? Indulge the dark passenger.”[break][break]
It would be unsurprising. Did he and Tapu Koko not provoke chaos from one another much the same?[break][break]
As NATURE’S MADNESS whipped around them, colliding from each Tapu, Fern laughed. The storm worsened, and his dragapult wavered in the air again—struggling to weather the lash of wind and rain with the hits she’d endured.[break][break]
She could drop him right now. Aggressive as she’d become, Fern wouldn’t be terribly surprised. Medb hissed, ruby eyes fixing on the basculegion below once more. Over the rumbles of thunder and the howl of the gale, Fern heard the man call out. “Follow them,” Fern barked, and Medb’s tail lashed furiously, but she dove after them.[break][break]
